Howdy everyone!
Today is a special day. It's International Women's Day! I did some quick stories on my Instagram for IWD where I gave a few shout outs to women who light a spark in me but I wanted to elaborate a little more on one of the women I picked. This month, I'll be sharing some of my favorite women and why they inspire me and today I'll be kicking it off with Kacey Musgraves.
I know I'm not the only person that has this opinion but... I don't like country music. It's just not the type of music I care for. I like classic country music like Johnny Cash and Lyle Lovett, but outside of that... I'll pass. HOWEVER, I came across Kacey Musgrave's music a few months ago and thought "Whoa. This is country music now?" Well, I started digging into her album from last year, Golden Hour, because I just HAD to know more and really loved the album.
I quickly realized that I wasn't listening to country music. I was listening to HER country music. Kacey's take and spin on country music felt pure. It's not muddied by bullshit lyrics about dogs, trucks, and cheating significant others. Her lyrics felt so genuine, like she was speaking her truth, and just sending positive vibes out to the world -- something it so desperately needs.
As any normal person would do, I started researching Kacey herself. Where did she grow up? How did she break in? When's her next tour? I needed to know.
It turns out she's from a small town east of Dallas and based on what I've learned, she's been singing all her life and started taking guitar lessons at age 12. Her teacher really pushed her to do more than just play and sing the guitar. I won't go over her whole career or discography but after moving to Austin at age 18 and then setting out to Nashville a couple years afterward.
There's been a couple interview videos I've seen where Kacey talks about her time in Austin impersonating Hannah Montana at birthday parties while she pursued her music career. And while in Nashville, she landed a gig as a songwriter for a publishing company, setting aside songs for herself while she wrote for other musicians. We've heard similar stories from many other creators/artists where they bust their asses off and grind day-in, day-out for years on end to support themselves until they break-in to whatever industry they're aiming for. Having the resilience, patience, and confidence in oneself and knowing it's only a matter of time that they'll achieve their goals.
Anyone that has the humility to do the things that Kacey has done to get to where she is, earns my utmost respect and truly inspires me. And that's why I've picked her as one of the badass women for International Women's Day.
